Thanks to your contribution, UBUNTU can improve daily lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
175 children are in the Feeding their Future program. Around 2:30 they receive a meal before they go home. This meal consists of carbs, protein and vegetables and one day a week a piece of fruit. Even during vacation periods children can enjoy a meal at school. This is very important as during these breaks schools in South Africa suspend its daily meal to children. So many of them rely on UBUNTU for food when the school is closed.
We started with after school activities to teach the children a skill and keep them connected with their culture. We introduced three classes: sewing, woodwork and traditional dancing. The teachers of these classes are people from the local community.
The idea behind the after-school program is:
- to give a chance to less gifted learners to express themselves,
- to increase confidence, self-esteem and self-reliance of learners,
- to open doors for future employment for learners,
- to be a skillful and responsible citizen of the country.
the Induna and the Chief of Bodlayabongolo had allocated two pieces of land to UBUNTU with as purpose establishing a vegetable garden and community center.
The life-line of a producing vegetable garden is a reliable water source. After drilling 84m deep water was found. It is estimated that this borehole will be able to produce 4,000L per hour and holds enough water for the next 10 years. On the first piece of land seven greenhouses will be build. In each greenhouse one of the following crops will be planted: spinach, cabbage, tomato, union, beetroot, carrot and cucumber. On the other piece of land fruit trees and butternut will be grown. All these vegetables and fruits will be used when preparing meals for the children. Any additional crop will be sold in the community at lower prices than in the local supermarkets.
The level of unemployment in the community is very high, around 55%. UBUNTU strives to have all work done by local community members. At the moment UBUNTU has 2 full time food-handlers, 4 full time people working on the land and 51 people have worked in different capacities to establish the vegetable garden on a part time basis
Over time UBUNTU has distributed 300 mosquito nets and bought basic medical equipment for the local clinic.
